“What is it and why does it matter?”

We often hear the questions like "Why is taking ages to boot-up windows?" or  "Why it's taking so long to start the web browser?" The major culprit here is Drive Fragmentation.

The more programs you install (and uninstall), updates you run and files you move, the more chaotic your hard disk gets. Simple example:




The Fragmentation phenomenon:

1. You uninstall the office suite on your machine; these files are deleted, leaving a gap as you can see.
2. Now you install a huge video editing suite which takes up more space than the office suite. Windows now tries to put the files in the gap, but they obviously don’t fit anymore.
3. Then your video editing suite is split into two parts. The hard disk now needs more time to collect the data to start the program and use specific functions. Since all programs, including your operating system itself, constantly access files, the end result is an overall sluggish system.

This is a simple example of how fragmentation occurs. Simply by deleting, moving, installing and copying files, fragmentation happens DAILY. Even when you’re just browsing the Web or receiving e-mails, your hard disk becomes more and more fragmented, and you lose performance.
The effect on performance is exponentially related to how many files are being accessed at the same time. Also, keep in mind that your hard disk is mechanical and is therefore the weakest link in the chain. Your processor, main memory and motherboard all have to wait until data is read by the slow mechanical hard disk.
In order to counteract the fragmentation of files, it is important to Defrag the hard drive. This process puts the scattered file fragments back together, thereby accelerating the system. Now, PC users can finally work at the right pace again.

Choosing the right defragmenter for your disk

While Windows’ built-in disk defragmenter does an okay job, it is not sufficient by itself. Professional tools can automate the defragmentation process and are capable of rearranging the hard disk much more efficiently. If you use the right defragmenter, boot time will go down, and your programs will respond much more quickly.

After a successful install of Windows 7 (32 bit) I had tested it for a few months.. I had said it before but I'll say it again.. Microsoft has a true gem on their hands this time around!! 


I love Windows 7 and hope that i'll install the Final Release version within a week as my DVD-RW is not working now.

Well there's thousands of things that differs Windows 7 from Vista. You Can read my previous post for that, but for now i wanna comment on the defragmenter in 7. It is vastly improved over Vista's in all aspects.. it's faster, seems to do a much better job and actually gives you a progress bar.. Total time to defragment my hard disk (110GB's) : less than 10 minutes!!!! :) I usually use a 3rd party defragmenter but I think this time around I'll be sticking with the Windows one.. until it gives me reason to think otherwise of course.. 

Well "where there're PROS there're CONS"(quoted by me :), i mean in in every application there're contrast areas but here it's not enough to replace it by any costly third party application.

PROS:

1. Provides users with more control over defrag jobs and shows detailed information about each job. You can also safely terminate the defragmenting process any time without any adverse effects.

2. Uses less time to defrag big size disks than the predecessor versions of Windows.

3. You can use the command prompt to defrag your disks with more options. (Read more..)

4. Simultaneously can defragment & consolidate free spaces of 2 or more partitions.

5. Time scheduling option: In Windows 7 it can be scheduled from within the Scheduler to run daily, weekly or monthly.

CONS:

1.   It lacks any kind of visual interface, which makes it little hard to know exactly what it's going on during the whole process.

Defragment in Windows 7 using Command Prompt

Although windows comes with a powerful defragmentation utility, there might be instances when you would want to defrag your drive using the command prompt. Even when you don’t have a reason to use the command line for defragmenting your drive, you might wanna do it because it’s cool and you can show off your power user status in front of your friends.(Well, don’t mind. It’s normal :’)
Let’s see how to defrag a drive using command line in Windows 7.

Switch	Description
/a	Perform analysis on the specified volumes.
/c	Perform the operation on all volumes.
/e	Perform the operation on all volumes except those specified.
/h	Run the operation at normal priority (default is low).
/m	Run the operation on each volume in parallel in the background.
/t	Track an operation already in progress on the specified volume.
/u	Print the progress of the operation on the screen.
/v	Print verbose output containing the fragmentation statistics.
/x	Perform free space consolidation on the specified volumes.
/r	Performs partial defragmentation (default). Attempts to consolidate only fragments smaller than 64 mb.
/w	Performs full defragmentation. Attempts to consolidate all file fragments, regardless of their size.
/f	Forces defragmentation of the volume when free space is low.

Several new switches or parameters are added to the defragmentation console tool (defrag.exe) in Windows 7. The switches are /E, /H, /M, /T, /U & /X. Here is the entire list of parameters supported by defrag.exe (v6.1) in Windows 7.
IMPORTANT:
To use defrag in command prompt, you have to run the “cmd” as administrator. Without admin privilege defrag.exe will not work.

 
EXAMPLES:
1. To analyze a drive (say C:)  --   defrag c: /a /v
2. To defrag a drive (say E:) – defrag /v /r
3. To defrag every file irrespective of its size – defrag c: /v /w
